Instrument Engineers – Instrumental for Success

These are the days of automation. Most of the tasks that were performed manually or using primitive tools have now been automated with the use of machinery with advanced technologies. Instrument engineering is the process through which processes and systems are automated through optimized designing and configuration.
Instrument Engineers are responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of instruments and entire instrumentation systems considered being the eyes and ears of any industrial undertaking. The type of instruments needed for ensuring better quality and efficiency of the end product are decided by an instrument engineer. He/she is also responsible for installation and commissioning and trouble shooting of different instruments as well.
An Instrument Engineer makes sure that project or asset discipline and engineering procedures are performed within schedule and budget, and preserving technical integrity. He/she estimates and executes various instrument engineering actions, including technical study and detailed design, concept and front end engineering development.
Instrument engineers usually work within industries that involve automated processes, including production, manufacturing or chemical plants, with the objective of enhancing system reliability, optimization, stability, productivity and safety. Instrument engineers are required to provide onshore support to the offshore operations team to facilitate effective maintenance and repair activities and act as offshore/onshore focal point for performance monitoring and troubleshooting of Instrument systems. They must also identify and provide cost effective engineering solutions to platform operations and maintenance problems and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, improve reliability, and reduce operating costs.
The Instrument Engineer performs the design of due instrument alteration associated to oil and gas production facilities and related off-sites. He or she makes sure that the design meets all recognized industrial codes and standards. The instrument engineer is responsible for reviewing specifications, drawings, and other documentation from contractors and consultants. He/she is directly responsible for ordering and reserving stock materials for any modifications. They must also make sure that all materials are in compliance with the company's standards and specifications. The Instrument Engineer communicates on a regular basis with the electrical, civil, mechanical and structural engineers within the department in order to take care of any interdisciplinary obligation for the modifications. It is their responsibility to act as a core to make sure the entire integral package is assembled correctly prior to distributing. He/she has the responsibility of collecting, talking about and responding to any queries or comments that may come from the approval of a modification package. In addition, he/she oversees and leads the construction, engineering and pre-commissioning contract staff throughout the execution of the modification.
The instrument engineer is usually responsible for the following activities:
·         Responsible for the design and development of instrumentation systems for industrial facilities. This includes the specification of industrial instrumentation, including the material to support installation.
·         Develop instrumentation installation drawings, data sheets and specifications, in full compliance with recognized industry standards, safety standards, and various client specifications.
·         Assist in the technical development of assigned project P&IDs.
·         Develop technical tabulation to support the selection of instrumentation and control systems.
·         Assist in the development of project schedules and manpower requirements.
·         Review and checking of technical vendor submittals for installation requirements.
·         Prepare instrumentation calculations for control valves, flow orifices, and relief valves as required.
·         Provide support to procurement of instrument items.
