Most mechanical engineers and geologists hold advanced degrees in their specialties and spend several years working as assistants before obtaining independent drilling jobs. Typically, people applying for mechanical engineering jobs on oil rigs must have completed undergraduate engineering degree programs and some firms prefer to hire people who have also completed postgraduate programs.
